Episode 27: Squash Facts and the Roots of Drought Tolerant Plants

Casey shares some facts about squash, the last in a series about the Three Sisters. Squash is one of the few major crop plants native to North America, and its big leaves are great indicators of soil moisture. Squash plants are so cool, they even have a bee named after them.

Just as drought tolerant plants have modifications to their leaves that allow them to survive desert conditions, they also have modifications to their roots. Daniel describes some of these specialized roots.
