Episode 29: Skunk Facts, Waxy Leaves, and the Lotus Effect

 

Casey’s dog keeps getting sprayed by a skunk, which inspired her to share a few skunk facts. One involves Johnny Depp.

Then Daniel talks about cuticles – the waxy coating on leaves. Not only does the cuticle protect against water loss, it’s also a self-cleaning mechanism. The leaves of certain plants, like lotus, are particularly hydrophobic. By studying them, we have learned how to manufacture water-repellent fabrics and other surfaces. It’s called biomimicry!
